Nursing staff demonstrate newly purchased equipment at a reception for sponsorsOur 2009 event raised $63,000 which was used to purchase much needed specialized equipment; an Anaesthetic Trolley, Urology Trolley, Plastics Trolley, Anaesthetic Drug StorageTrolleys (4), Camera Heads & Light, and an Hydraulic Instrument Rack Trolley.

The very specialized, custom designed, trolleys will aide in the efficiency of a variety of staff. The hydraulic trolley is used to position and transport heavy orthopaedic equipment for sterilization. The camera heads and light are used in "keyhole surgery" to see internally and provide the ability to photograph and video the procedure.

2008

Proceeds of the 2008 event were used to acquire much needed equipment valued at over $56,000.

The Critical Care Unit (CCU) gained a transport ventilator and defibrillator. Nurse Unit Manager Carol McKenzie explained that the new equipment would provide efficient and reliable support for patients. ‘‘The new ventilator will relieve the CCU from having to borrow one from the ED (Emergency Department) as often as we do and the defibrillator, configured to meet our transport monitoring needs, will also make patient transport safer,’’ she said.

Emergency Department Nurse Unit Manager Lisa Vermeulen was thrilled with the addition of a nasal endoscope. ‘‘The medical staff is very happy to have this - it will enable doctors to look for foreign bodies and also assist with other airway emergencies,’’ she said. The hospital’s operating theatre also received two radiographic tables (used for surgeries on hands, wrists and arms).

2007

The $41,000 raised at our 2007 event was used to purchase an ECG machine for the Critical Care Unit, a Training Resuscitation Simulation Manikin and Lifeguard Patient Trolley for the Emergency Department.
Thrilled with the acquisition, Carol McKenzie, Nurse Unit Manager of The Critical Care Unit said, “The new ECG machine is of real benefit as it is used to assist in the diagnosis and ongoing management of patients admitted with heart attack or suspected cardiac difficulties”. Peter Archer, Director of Emergency Services explained why the Manikin is so important, “The new Training Manikin will enable over 200 Emergency Department staff to practice and perfect skills and techniques used to resuscitate and treat patients that present in a critical condition. The improved technology of this particular Manikin will enable simulation of real events providing opportunities for doctors and nurses to safely practice their responses in preparation for actual emergencies.” “The Lifeguard Trolley is an extremely beneficial addition as well – especially during the busy Winter months. The specialised Trolley allows patients to undergo treatment, including X-Rays and keeps patients comfortable should there be a need to wait for a bed.”

2006

Our inaugural charity celebrity golf day raised $26,500. The proceeds from the event purchased three (3) much-needed CPAP Machines for the Unit. The CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine provides breathing support to patients that can benefit from some assistance to their own breathing during a critical illness.

In some cases this may avoid the need for the patient to be placed on a mechanical ventilator. It also can be used during transition from mechanical ventilation as patients recover to breathing on their own again.
